All You Need To Know About Pre-owned Toyota Fortuners
Tumblr media
Since its launch, the Toyota Fortuner has been a well-selling premium SUV. To this day, it remains a popular choice in the R400K category. The main points that attribute to that fact are the commanding design and the Toyota brand’s reliability. It stands on par with some of the newer models like the Honda CR-V. In short, it is a vehicle that is expected to offer bulletproof reliability. In reality, it does.
So does buying a used Toyota Fortuner for sale make sense? Considering that it is one of the vest SUVs in its class, it makes complete sense. So here we will offer some guidelines when you are planning to buy a used Toyota Fortuner. But first, let us take a look at the main variants of the vehicle.
Toyota Fortuner- Variants and Features
When the Fortuner was launched, it came with a 3.0-litre diesel motor and manual transmission. In January 2012, a version with 4-speed automatic transmission was launched. This was upgraded to a 5-speed transmission in 2013.
The current market model was launched in December 2016, which came with a redesigned cabin and chassis. A petrol variant was also added in the same year. In 2017, a Sportivo model with a sporty touch was launched. In September 2019, a special Celebration edition was introduced.
The Fortuner comes with a 2755 cc diesel engine and a 2694 cc petrol engine. The diesel variant starts at around Rs. 32.5 lakhs and the petrol variant at close to 30 lakhs.
Here are some of the key pros of the Toyota Fortuner
An imposing street present
Excellent build quality that leads to a long life
Both diesel and petrol engines are capable performers.
A spacious and practical cabin
The off-road performance is impressive.
Full range of safety kits and plenty of other features
What is the best used Toyota Fortuner model?
It is best to choose a Fortuner model that was released post-January 2012. These models came with some updates that improved the overall performance. Also, the front-end design was made more attractive. You can expect an odometer reading of 70,000 km or more from a Fortuner around eight years old.
However, considering the car’s overall reliability, this is a good deal that offers excellent value. We will advise you not to pick a used Fortuner that is over eight years old. You will not get a good resale value for such a vehicle.
In case you are looking to buy the latest model that was released in 2016, keep in mind that Fortuners have a strong resale value. Even at that price, the Fortuner will offer the right bang for your buck. If you are an off-road enthusiast, you can also look for a used 4×4 Fortuner.
Without a doubt, the Toyota Fortuner is one of the best SUVs you can pick from the used car market.

The all-new Jeep Commander – a three-row version of the Jeep Compass rumoured to be named the Jeep Meridian for the Indian market – has been revealed inside and out, with Jeep publishing a few images of its new three-row SUV that will take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The new SUV will go on sale in South America first, with the India launch expected in 2022, and a couple of near production-ready test mules of the Jeep Meridian were also recently spotted in India. Now, though, we have our clearest look yet at the Jeep Meridian SUV.
The Jeep Meridian’s face derives clear influence from Jeep's newest offerings such as the new-gen Grand Cherokee and the top-of-the-line Grand Wagoneer. It has the same square-jawed look with the flush seven-slot grille and angular LED headlights making for an imposing front end. The Meridian has a more upright shape compared to the Compass in order to accommodate the longer wheelbase and also has an extended rear overhang. Do note the tail section is completely new, and incorporates the slender LED tail-lights like seen on the Grand Wagoneer.
The Jeep Meridian carries forward the same interior layout as the facelifted Compass. However, the materials and themes used are different. The pictures show the leather inserts on the dash being replaced by a brown suede finish in the Meridian, while the brushed chrome finish seen on the Compass’ dash has been replaced by a copper finish. Also seen are brown leather seats featuring a quilted pattern, as well as open-pore wood trim on the dash and door panels.
While Jeep is yet to confirm the final specifications and features for the Meridian, some feature expected include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a panoramic sunroof as well as multi-zone automatic climate control. The test mules spotted in India had a six-seater captain configuration with second-row captain chairs, which are expected to also be power-adjustable.
Other features carried over from the 2021 Jeep Compass include the UConnect 5 infotainment system along with the 10.25-inch digital instruments display, auto headlights and wipers, electronic parking brake, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, eight-way adjustable front seats, an Alpine audio system, a powered tailgate, 360-degree cameras and more.
The seven-seat Jeep Meridian is expected to get the same engine options as the Compass – a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is expected to be offered in a significantly higher state of tune in the Meridian. Manual and automatic gearbox options will be available with both engine options, and all-wheel-drive will be on offer as well.
The Jeep Meridian is expected to arrive in India early in 2022 and is expected to be priced at a Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh premium over equivalent Compass variants. The new SUV, codenamed the H6, will be the third of four models Jeep has planned for India.

SUV cars are such a bomb to drive and collect! Like us SUV fans, you will love to have one car in that collection. However, finding out that an SUV is suitable for you may be a difficult choice.
And that’s why we are here, to give you a list of the best SUV cars available in the Philippines! Check this out, as each car will amaze you!
The Best SUV Cars In The Philippines
1. The first option for SUV on the list is a popular contestant from the US: the Ford Everest! Although our favorite Ford Bronco is not on the list this year, we still have the cool Ford Everest to cover!
It is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the Filipino market despite its great 7-seater capacity due to the smell yet effective engine in the cabin. Surprisingly, Ford Everest’s engine is one of the smallest engines in the SUV list.
There are three engine options for this Ford Philippines respectively 2.2-liter diesel, 2.0-liter turbo diesel, and 2.0-liter Bi-turbo diesel. Depending on which variant you are driving, the engine can produce a sufficient powering amount.
Testers receive great results after driving Ford Everest, as it yields 45 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city. The outstanding fuel-efficient characteristic makes Ford Everest one of the best SUVs to drive without worrying about fuel price.
2. Another best SUV in the Philippines is called the Nissan Terra. Although it is quite new to the market, its impact has been numerous due to the wonderful driving performance while keeping the fuel exhaustion low. It is a great choice for Filipino families to travel with up to 7 people.
Despite its great size in length and width compared to its SUV rivals, Terra’s fuel consumption numbers are impressive, with 38 mpg when driving on the highway and 19 mpg in the city.
Nissan Terra’s power source comes from a 2.5-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine capable of producing 190 hp and 460 Nm of torque. The transmission can be varied between 6 and 7-speed automatic or manual mode.
3. If you are a fan of Mitsubishi, you get one great soldier on this list: Mitsubishi Montero Sport. This 7-seater SUV has made its statement in the midsize SUV statement with its bold exterior and powerful engine on the inside.
On the highway, testers record 35 mpg fuel consumption at an average speed of 50mph. The modern Variable Geometry Turbo achieves the numbers (VGT) paired with a 2.4-liter inline-4 diesel engine that generates up to 180 hp and 432 Nm of torque.
For the normal variant such as GLX, a 6-speed manual transmission is fine, but if you want to add in the sport-growl features, then head for an 8-speed automatic one.
The Filipino SUV drivers love this car, as it is voted one of the most practical vehicles in the SUV segment of the Philippines in 2022.
4. The title comes from the fact that Isuzu mu-X is both fuel-efficient (equipped with fuel-saving MU-X RZ4E 1.9) and affordable (starting price from Php 1,350,000) at the same time!
Moreover, manufacturers pair up this car with a 1.9-liter inline-4 turbo diesel, which is ranked the smallest in engine displacement in its class. With such a small engine, there’s no way it can produce and use much more fuel than the larger displacements.
When it comes to driving performance and fuel efficiency, we can be proud to say this breed has one of the best numbers recorded: only 35 mpg and 20mpg on the highway and the city, respectively. Due to the variant, a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission can be applied.
5. Suppose you have made it to the last car; congratulations, as we have saved the best for last!
The best diesel SUV car you can find in the Philippines is Toyota Fortuner. This amazing car stands out due to its phenomenal performance capabilities, which results in outstanding power-delivering and fuel-saving compared to other rivals in the same segment.
The latest version of the Toyota Fortuner was launched in late 2020, and it has been approved to have five-percent-lower fuel consumption compared to its ancestors.
Such a new version that saves much more fuel, plus modern technology and safety, will grant drivers the best drive ever! The model has successfully solidified its name as one of the top choices for SUVs choice.
Toyota Fortuner offers 45 mpg and 25 mpg on the highway and in the city. Under its hood, there are two types of engines to select: a 2.4-liter and 2.8-liter diesel engine.

Toyota Fortuner For Sale: Buying Used
The Toyota Fortuner for sale has been India’s largest selling premium SUV since its launch way back in August 2009. The demand was through the roof and the company had to shut new bookings twice in the first two years itself. Even today, it remains the most popular SUV in its price bracket, outselling all its rivals combined together.
Into its second generation, the Fortuner today has a starting price of From R566 800.
It rubs shoulders with other full-sized SUVs like the Honda CR-V and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Available in both fuel types, this 7-seater is one aspirational model for most SUV car owners. This is primarily due to its strong brand recall, muscular and intimidating design and Toyota’s legendary reliability.
Profile of the typical Used Toyota Fortuner buyer A used Toyota Fortuner is often searched by those who have always wanted to own one but their limited budget kept this vehicle out of reach. Over the years, this SUV’s price has only gone up and this means it is out of reach for many. That said, the older generation model, sold till mid-2016 can be had for less than R400K, making it a very tempting option for anyone who has a budget for a smaller SUV like the Creta or the XUV500.
Given its bulletproof reliability and go-anywhere capabilities for the 4×4 model, a used Fortuner is also on the radar for those who are in the market for a used, dependable SUV. Those on a budget can still pick a 2012 model for as low as R250K post negotiations.
Key positives of the Toyota Fortuner The reliable nature of the Fortuner is a key strength. Just service it regularly and this thing will last for over 2 lakh kilometres without requiring any major expenses. Next is the sheer size and design that gives it a lot of road presence. If you want an ego massaging SUV, this is it!
The current model also comes with a modern and feature-loaded cabin and there are two engine options to pick from. Off-road enthusiasts will also talk endlessly about this vehicle’s capabilities off the road.
Another area where the Fortuner shines is in its re-sale value. The original model sold for about R450K on-road and if you want one (2009-2011 model year), you will still need to pay about half of that, even for a 7-8-year-old vehicle! The ideal used Toyota Fortuner SUV you can buy
The models sold post-Jan’12 are the best deals in our opinion. These came with minor updates including a better front-end design. However, given that most Fortuners are driven a lot, the common odometer reading for such a 6-7 year old Fortuner will be 50,000 to 70,000 km.
Buying older and newer used Toyota Fortuner SUVs Para 7&8: Older and newer cars. People buy used cars that are almost new as well as quite old. So someone who considers a hatchback at 50k kms may decide to go for sedan at 75k kms. So we need to cover all common ages that can be found in the used car market for that specific car.
Newer versions are also available in the market but command a higher price. That said, these will definitely have a lower odometer reading and in most cases, will still be under company warranty.
Used Fortuner SUV: Real-world Fuel Economy The Fortuner is a heavy vehicle and expecting high fuel efficiency figures will be unfair. That said, thanks to low-end punch (short gearing), you can expect over 10 kmpl in city runs if you end up using higher gears. The current-gen model is slightly less efficient with the automatic delivering 8-9 kmpl for city runs – again if the higher gears are used.
Out on the highways however, the Fortuner delivers 13-14 kmpl at speeds of 90-100 km/h.
The petrol Fortuner is even thirstier: owners have reported as low as 6-7kmpl for city runs with about 10-11 kmpl on open roads.
Maintenance and Service Tips for a Used Toyota Fortuner
For a premium vehicle like the Fortuner, given that regular servicing isn’t too expensive, we say stick to an authorized workshop. Even more so if the car is under warranty.

Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation
Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation

Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation
If Ford recently launched the towel with its sedans, it is to better focus on the development of its commercial vehicles. Like the Ford Escape, for example.
Unchanged for several years, the Escape remains one of the flagship vehicles of the American manufacturer. Direct competitor with models like the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V , the American SUV continues to pull skillfully in a saturated category of vehicles.
But why, exactly?
A range of engines
The answer is partially under the hood. Because instead of offering only one or two engines as a good part of its rivals, the Escape offers three.
Unless you have a limited budget, forget the basic engine, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 168 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. The power is a little fair and the all-wheel drive is not offered.
Tumblr media
Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation
To qualify, you must turn to one of the two optional engines, EcoBoost engines with a cubic capacity of 1.5 and 2.0 liters respectively.
The smallest is also the most energy efficient in the range, which has a combined city / highway fuel consumption of 9.1 L / 100 km with the front wheels and 9.9 L / 100 km with the all-wheel drive.
Then, aboard the Titanium version that we reviewed, the 2.0-liter engine and all-wheel drive are standard. There, we are entitled to 245 horses and a couple of 275 lb-ft. With an optional towing package, the Escape with this powertrain also stands out with a 1,588-kilogram (3,500-pound) towing capacity.
Equipped with this mechanism, the Ford Escape becomes a vehicle with a frankly interesting driving behavior. The six-speed automatic is a bit dated, but it does its job honestly and fuel economy remains reasonable, even if Japanese models remain the champions.

A cockpit to rework
If the Escape takes a road behavior beyond expectations for an SUV that has not been reviewed for several years, it must be admitted that certain components of its cabin betray its age.
The driving position is good and the space ample for the driver and front passenger. That said, the interior of the Escape is dotted with cheap plastics, even in the Titanium variant.
Tumblr media
Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation
On the model tested, an eight-inch touch screen sat in the center of the console, incorporating the honest SYNC 3 system, very easy to maneuver. Only problem, the position of the screen, very far from the driver, makes some maneuvers too little ergonomic.
In the back, the seats are quite limited and of acceptable comfort, nothing more. Fortunately, Ford has taken care to leave a lot of space in the trunk.
With a 964-liter cargo space (1,925 with the rear seats folded down), the Escape has enough room to carry anything from ski gear to camping gear.
Some competitors like the Honda CR-V (1,110 liters) and the Toyota RAV4 (1,064 liters) do better, but the Escape does not have much to blush. The threshold of the chest, rather low, makes besides the easy access.

Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation
Strongly 2020
One of the biggest drawbacks of the 2019 Escape is that we know he lives on borrowed time. Ford has already confirmed that it will introduce a brand new generation of the model for 2020.
The new Escape promises in particular a hybrid variant as well as a redesigned cabin and modernized mechanical elements. We will learn more in the coming months. In the meantime, the 2019 Escape is starting to look like a consolation prize for those who must change vehicles this year.
Marketed in S, SE, SEL and Titanium versions, the current Escape is priced at $ 26,399 before shipping and preparation.

Ford Escape 2019: waiting for the next generation
In addition to the most powerful engine in the lot, the Titanium version features 19-inch rims and a variety of driver assistance systems.
Still, difficult to talk about a reasonable purchase. If you're holding on to the 2.0-liter engine (and you're good at keeping it there), as well choose a SEL version.
And if you are able to wait a few more months for the new generation Escape, our little finger tells us that it's probably worth it ...

BS6-compliant Mahindra Alturas G4 Launched At Rs 28.69 lakh
The BS6 Mahindra Alturas G4 continues to be pitted against the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and the Isuzu MU-X in the Indian market
Mahindra has finally launched the BS6-compliant version of its flagship 7-seater SUV offering in India – the Alturas G4. The updated car has been priced from Rs 28.69 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards, which means that the carmaker has hiked the car’s price by almost Rs 1 lakh.
Mahindra continues to offer the Alturas G4 in two variants – 2WD and 4WD. While the former is priced at Rs 28.69 lakh, the fully-loaded top-end trim with a four-wheel drive configuration will now set you back by Rs 31.69 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom). Take a look at this price comparison between the BS6 Alturas G4 and the outgoing BS4 model –
Variant BS6 Alturas G4 Price* BS4 Alturas G4 Price* 2WD Rs 28.69 lakh Rs 27.70 lakh 4WD Rs 31.69 lakh Rs 30.70 lakh
*all prices, ex-showroom Delhi
Mahindra continues to offer the Alturas G4 with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, which is coupled with the same Mercedes-Benz sourced 7-speed automatic gearbox as before. In the BS4 avatar, the said powertrain put out 180 PS of maximum power, along with 420 Nm of peak torque.
Just like the outgoing BS4 model, the updated Alturas G4 is well-packed in terms of features. The car gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, dual-zone auto climate control, a powered tailgate, front ventilated seats and an electric sunroof.
The 7-seat SUV scores well in terms of safety too. Mahindra offers the Alturas G4 with safety tech like nine airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill-Start Assist (HSA), Hill-Descent Control (HDC), active rollover protection, traction control system and brake assist system.
The BS6 Mahindra Alturas G4 continues to rival the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and the Isuzu MU-X in the country, while it also takes on a few similarly priced seven-seat monocoque SUVs including Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan AllSpace.

10 Cars At Auto Expo 2018 That Will Launch By 2020
You can count the cars launched at the Auto Expo on your fingers, but there’s a big a list of cars which were showcased and are set to be launched in the country by 2020
The top-of-the-line version of the eco-friendly BMW is presented in its exclusive E-Copper Metallic at the Auto Expo 2018 and is scheduled to be launched in the country by the end of 2018. The BMW i8 Roadster, the i8 Coupe will be the halo of the brand “i” “They must be carriers of future technology, such as large rechargeable batteries, electric motors, small turbochargers, hybrid components and light-weight structures. Auto Expo Expected To Be Launched BMW kept the clipper doors and flight supports while making some changes to incorporate the removable cloth cap (which folds / unfolds in 15 seconds). The i8 Roadster is two pure seats, unlike the Coupé, a two-seat arrangement.
The BMW i8 Roadster contains devices similar to Coupe, but has obvious changes, mainly due to open configuration. The weight was increased by 60 kg due to reinforcements made in the carbon fiber structure, and additional mechanisms added to the extension protection and folding cloth roof. The larger 34 Ah battery, higher than the previous 20 Ah unit, improves the electric range only from 35 to 53 km. The compact drive performance numbers, consisting of a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, are 374 horsepower, with time from 0 to 100 from 4.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than a coupe.
Honda is amazing
The second generation of the Honda Amaze is centrally located at the Honda booth at the Auto Expo 2018 and will be launched in India in early 2019. Honda says the second generation Amaze is based on a completely new platform, unlike the earlier model, which was based on the Brio platform hatchback. This allowed a larger wheelbase among other non-dimensional changes that should lead to better interior space.
The design is bolder, and the soft lines inspired by the hatchback of the old car are replaced by an almost muscular position like a SUV. Major changes include exterior headlamps with larger LED DRL, large chrome-plated chassis in the form of a “wing”, a clamshell head cover, a roof line with a slippery slope, a deep shoulder line in the side, large rear lights and a spoiler mounted on the lips. From the inside, the dashboard has been fully revised and conforms to Honda’s new design language used in other models such as the Honda CR-V and the Honda Civic.
Honda also confirmed that the new Amaze will also be offered with varying degrees of CVT diesel. We expect to introduce 1.2 liter and 4-cylinder petrol engines and 1.5-liter turbo diesel engines in the new Amaze engine with some modifications to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
Hyundai Kona is the first Hyundai to offer its new Fluidic design philosophy: breaking the traditional Hyundai design for a strong design of love or hate. It will also be the first full EV electric vehicle Hyundai launches in India if everything goes according to plan. The network is in cascade, the high-DRL mode where the headlights are traditionally placed, the large headlights are placed down in the front fascia, the bold wheel arches and the rear design mimics the foreground, etc. It is the highlight of the new Kuna. The model exhibited at the Auto Expo Expected To Be Launched included a collection of characters inspired by Marvel Iron Man characters, with gray and metallic red paint alongside the iconic icon of the box in the spotlight.
Kia SP Concept
Kia offered a large part of its international collection at the Auto Expo 2018; from the 4-door flagship Stinger Pavilion to the Picanto Hatchback, Kia showed everyone what they could offer in their latest international market. The highlight of the Check Out the Top Cars of the Auto Expo show was the SP Concept, an introduction to a compact SUV that will be the company’s first product in 2019.
Kia SP Concept shows a new vision of Kia’s design philosophy, which traditionally uses many curves. Concept SP is more laminated, giving it an old look for SUVs rather than the intersection. Kia “Tiger Nose” are present, as well as DRL lamps placed on headlamps placed vertically. The design is quieter, and therefore closer to production, moving to the side and back; the window line with wrinkles in the rear glass chamber, the corresponding color ceiling and the high back lights will require minor changes.
There is no confirmation of the engines, transmission and transmission systems to be used by Kia SP Concept.
Mahindra Rexton
Mahindra introduced the SsangYong G4 Rexton at Auto Expo, and is expected to launch in India a new gala when launched in India during the holiday season. To be placed above the XUV500, the Rexton can be called the XUV700 and faces the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavor and the like.
With a length of about 5 meters and a width of 2 meters and a height of 1.8 meters, Mahindra Rexton (or XUV700) will be on par with the seven-seater SUV. Features such as projector headlamps, 9.2-inch touch screen entertainment system, 360 ° camera, cooled seats, and electric rear door in Sang Yong Rikston, Mahindra can choose to keep many of them to convert to a value display in the section.
SsangYong offers a single diesel engine at Rexton, a 2.2 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that develops 178 hp of maximum power and 420 Nm of torque. This can be brought to India with minor adjustments to improve efficiency or driving ability and pair it with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic transmission. Mahindra is expected to install Rexton in India to maintain its competitive price.
Maruti Suzuki Future Concept — S
While the Check Out the Top Cars of the Auto Expo of the new Maruti Suzuki Swift could have been the focus of attention on the second day of the Auto Expo 2018, Concept Future-S was the one who stole the thunder on the first day. Below for the brand and also dictates the design direction taken by the company in the future in general.
Vertical position, high hood, wide body and high ground clearance for proper passage. Highlights include LED headlights, mixed mesh, long liner and front front bumper for the old semi-vertical school with few body lines. Future-S can create a competitor for the Renault Kwid, with the latest in Maruti Suzuki Alto sales.
Inside, Future-S features luxurious elements such as the chassis panels on the dashboard, a large central console dominated by a multi-circular circular display and a square direction. Based on the Heartec platform that also supports the Swift twin, the production version of Future-S can be run by new diesel and gasoline engines manufactured at home by Maruti / Suzuki.

Road Tests: 2019 Toyota RAV4
Vital Statistics
Engine: 2.5 liter
Horsepower: 203
Torque: 184 lb-ft.
EPA: 26 mpg city / 35 highway
The original Toyota RAV4 was introduced here in 1996, and went on to play a major roll in launching the crossover craze that continues to accelerate in 2019. Now, the 5th gen of Toyota’s compact ute has arrived. And the all-new RAV’s reviews are already raves, including our pick as a best small utility of the year. So, let’s dive into the details of why.
Hard to believe the Toyota RAV4 has been on the road for well over 20-years now. During that time, the economy has been way up, and of course way down; and that was well before everyone had a smartphone in their hands.
Well, the first thing you’ll notice is that Toyota dialed up a seriously rugged new design for this generation of RAV, more than we’ve ever seen, including plenty of 4Runner cues. Hiking boots and cargo pants aren’t required to drive it, but they certainly wouldn’t be out of place; even if your adventures are limited to car pool lanes and suburban cull-de-sacs.
The front end is bigger and bolder, with a grille patterned after Toyota pickups; while the sides sport chunky fenders and clearly defined shoulders. Wheelbase is up about an inch.
The rear view is manly as well, featuring a big bumper with lots of simulated skid plate cladding.
The macho makeover doesn’t transfer over to the driving experience, however. We headed to California for our first drive opportunity. And while the seating position is high, with a generous amount of hood to look over, giving it a big truck feel; steering is very light, and handling is as predictable as a Camry.
There is plenty of engine noise under spirited acceleration; but once up to highway speed, things quiet down very nicely. While the standard 8-speed automatic transmission seems to quickly and easily find the right gear more often than not.
That noise emanates from the Camry’s 2.5-liter I4 engine; and output here is the same 203- horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque.
RAV4’s Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 26-City, 35-Highway, and 30-Combined with front-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, depending on the model, they range from 25-27 City, 33-34 Highway, and 29-30 Combined. All on Regular gas.
A Hybrid version will also be available later in the model year.
Safety systems get an updrade, Toyota’s Safety Sense fortunately loses the P; now known as TSS 2.0, with Smart Stop Technology standard.
Obviously, sharing the Camry’s TNGA-K platform, means the Rav remains front-wheel-drive based, with all-wheel-drive for an additional $1,400, regardless of trim.
Save for the returing Adventure model, which now comes with AWD standard. That system is a new Dynamic Torque Vectoring one, with Rear Driveline Disconnect, and it’s shared with Limited trim.
All other trims get a more basic system, though it does include Multi-Terrain Select. Ground clearance is as high as 8.6-inches, half an inch more than before.
The interior design is clean, burly, and truck-like too, with a dash that is more horizontal than before, as well as physically lower to improve visibility.
The center stack houses plenty of large controls, while above sits a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen. Entune 3.0 Audio Plus adds another inch to the screen. It may not be our favorite multimedia system, but it’s fairly easy to learn the basics.
Rear seat passengers will get a better experience than before, with easier access and comfier seats; as well as more space due to the wheelbase stretch and reshaped door panels.
The cargo floor is longer, but either it sits higher up or the roof slants more dramatically, as the space is actually down a little from last year from 38.4 cubic-ft. to 37.6; though Toyota claims the available space is more usable than before. Max capacity is down from 73.4 to 69.8 cubic-ft.
Base pricing is up just a tad over last year, at $26,595 for LE grade; top trim Limited stickers for $34,595. A reshuffling of trims will also see a sporty XSE HV Hybrid added into the mix as well.
Making a compact crossover choice is about the hardest of any segment, with literally dozens of great options. But, for over 20-years, the Toyota RAV4 has remained a leader of the pack; with this 2019 version, which includes not only a more rugged design, but more capability than ever, it’s a safe bet that won’t change any time soon.

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade Is Exactly What It Needs to Be
SEOUL, South Korea — If there’s one auto-industry rule to follow to have a strong fiscal 2019, it’s to have a strong SUV game. Fortunately for Hyundai, the Korean brand will launch the Palisade, its all-new flagship utility next summer just as the kids are getting out of school and parents are on the search for a new road-trip machine. And fortunately for those buyers, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade may be Hyundai’s most impressive SUV yet.
Serving as the replacement for the three-row 2019 Santa Fe XL, the new, three-inch-longer Palisade rides on a front-drive platform with Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel-drive system an available option. It has a 114.2-inch wheelbase and will directly compete with such vehicles as the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, and Ford Explorer as a spacious vehicle with seating for either seven or eight, depending on whether you opt for a bench or captain’s chairs in the second row. The interior is roomy enough that it almost feels like a minivan inside (the roof-mounted second- and third-row HVAC vents only enhance this sense) and the second-row seats have enough fore-aft adjustment to make the third row accessible to average-sized adults, if needed.
When the 2020 Palisade launches in the U.S. next summer, it won’t have the 2.2-liter diesel engine we found under the hood of our South Korean market test vehicle. Diesel-emission debate aside, the engine performed well enough but was loud and clattery from the Palisade’s exterior; this did provide a good test for interior noise levels, and the racket was masked fairly well thanks to copious amounts of sound deadening in this roughly 4,500-pound vehicle. Instead, we’ll receive an all-aluminum, Atkinson-capable 3.8-liter V-6 with something like 292 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. (The U.S. output figures haven’t been finalized.) The in-house eight-speed automatic in the vehicles we drove will also serve duty in U.S. models, and we found it to be a good partner for the diesel engine. Hyundai did not have fuel-economy estimates available for the U.S.-spec powertrain.
The suspension consists of struts up front and a multilink setup at the rear, essentially the industry standard for this class, and our Palisade rode on 20-inch wheels (18s are standard) with Michelin Primacy all-season tires. The Palisade’s ride is both comfortable and well-controlled, with just a hint of the firmness you’d find in SUVs with sportier pretensions. The ride was comfortable and never jarring during light off-roading on an unpaved hillside trail, yet the handling was composed and responsive on meandering back roads and during exercises at Hyundai’s proving grounds. Drive modes include Comfort, Sport, and Eco, with Sport firming up the steering and enlivening the throttle response and transmission shift programming. Traction modes include Sand, Mud, and Snow.
While all the vehicles on hand had the available all-wheel-drive system, when the going got tough, the Palisade simply stopped going, albeit with much of the blame to be apportioned to the venue. Specifically, Hyundai invited us to try the Palisade on a local beach where we could use the vehicle’s Sand traction-control setting to have a little rooster-tailed fun. Unfortunately, no fewer than three of the 10 or so assembled Palisades met their match once the beach had been well and truly churned up by the group, getting hopelessly buried up to their undercarriages in deep, soft sand that required higher speeds, lower tire pressures, or both to realistically traverse. No matter, the likelihood of a Palisade finding itself on anything more than a dirt road is about the same as getting struck by lightning on your way to cash-in your winning Mega Millions ticket.
Still, as we sat there on the beach waiting for the stuck-UVs to be extricated, we found plenty to like in the cabin, with its fairly convincing wood-look trim, soft Nappa leather seats, and light, airy feel (helped in part by the rich looking, cream-colored upholstery). While there are still some painted plastic surfaces that don’t fit the otherwise premium aesthetic, the Palisade’s interior presents above the status quo for the segment. Our example was well-equipped and came with the optional 10.25-inch display panel with navigation, which is mounted vertically on the dash similar to the latest offerings from Mercedes. Our Palisade was also equipped with the optional head-up display and the Surround View monitor, the latter of which should really be a standard feature in vehicles of this size. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on every Palisade, and we appreciated the camera display between the speedometer and tachometer that gives a look at blind spots when turning or changing lanes.
The Palisade is the first Hyundai to be equipped with a push-button-style transmission, with the buttons located on the high, wide, and sweeping center console, next to the drive and traction-mode controller. While the center stack looks a little button-heavy, all the switchgear is laid out clearly and thoughtfully, making it relatively simple to find most basic functions even on first introduction. There is also a sizable center cubby under the armrest that should fit smaller handbags, and a tray under the console for snacks or other detritus. USB ports are found in both first and second rows for device-charging and connectivity.
Other interesting optional features available on the Palisade include an intercom system for speaking with passengers in the rear rows, as well as a mute function which allows music to play up front but not in the rear of the vehicle. Wireless device charging, a 630-watt Infinity premium stereo, and heated/ventilated first- and second-row seating is also available. The optional dual-panel sunroof still leaves plenty of headroom in all rows.
As you’d imagine, a whole suite of safety tech is found on the Palisade, including standard speed-sensing cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic warning and parking-distance warning. A rearview monitor with parking guidance and forward collision avoidance is also found on all Palisades. Really, it’s a pretty comprehensive standard safety package with the only out-of-pocket items being front parking distance alert, rain-sensing wipers, and a rear-occupant alert system that detects activity in the car after it’s locked and uses a honk of the horn and a flash of the headlights to alert the driver to a forgotten child, pet, or snoozing grandmother.
We’ll be able to get a better feel for the Palisade on American roads before its launch here. Hyundai says that the Palisade will get one state of tune to fit both the Korean and U.S. markets, so we’re expecting the ride and handling to feel largely the same as it did in South Korea, barring and last-minute adjustments. Meanwhile, Kia will launch its own Telluride SUV on this same chassis, which we expect will slot into a slightly lower price point. That price is still unclear, but if the company stays true to form, it’ll be in-line with those of its major competitors if not a bit lower. Figure a starting point in the mid-$30,000 range and to pay $10,000 or so more for the top-spec, all-wheel-drive versions. While these sorts of vehicles are anathema to those who seek driving enjoyment, they can still be pleasant places to spend time. The Palisade is that, and it proves that Hyundai’s SUV game is indeed strong right now.

Dirty Deeds: Lexus LX vs. Jeep Wrangler vs. Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs. Land Rover Discovery
Born and raised among the skyscrapers of New York City and now living in sprawling Los Angeles, I’m used to city life. I’m inured to creeping rush-hour traffic, to stepping over sidewalk trash, to the ever-present light pollution; they’re sacrifices we make to live in the places we love. But city life wears on you, a realization that can hit in an instant. A knowing glance or diverted gaze during a chance encounter with one of the millions of others beaten down by the daily grind could be all it takes to want to get away.
But I—perhaps like you—have life to deal with. I work during the week and spend my weekends playing catch-up. Memories of my first sleepaway camp and seeing the Milky Way pop from the inky, unadulterated night sky and dreams of escape remain just that. Breaking free ain’t easy.
For those who must reconnect with nature, these four SUVs make it easier to stay alive during the week and live on the weekends.
For our comparison test, we wanted SUVs comfortable on a daily commute or road-trip but also able to turn well off the beaten path for a night of primitive camping to escape our fellow man. That meant we needed the everyday comfort of a crossover, the features and technology of a modern sedan, and the off-road capability of a ZVM-2901. (YouTube it. You’re welcome.)
Because American roads aren’t quite ready for screw-driven off-roaders, we assembled four legendary and street-legal nameplates: Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Discovery, Lexus LX, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This group will get you out of town—and then some.
Our test would have us driving north from Los Angeles along the eastern portion of the Sierra Nevada to Bishop, California, where the following day we’d tackle the trail to Coyote Flat, about 10,000 feet above sea level. Then we’d camp. It’s not Moab, but this 20-odd-mile trail includes deep sand, rocks, cliff faces, and multiple water crossings.
The winner would be the vehicle that best balances off-road performance with on-pavement drivability. We wanted something that the average Joe or Jane could take off-road with confidence after a tough week crushing soybean futures. To level the playing field, price is ignored.
The Field
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is the latest evolution of the vehicle that launched this segment. The new Wrangler Rubicon wears 33-inch BFGoodrich Baja Champion All-Terrain KO2 tires at either end of front and rear live axles, each of which boasts a locking differential and an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect. Under the hood, our tester packs an electrified 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 making 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic and Jeep’s beefiest part-time four-wheel-drive system.
Land Rover, meanwhile, has come a long way from building British Jeep knockoffs. The 2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury Si6 looks the part of a suburban mall crawler, with soft lines and a beautiful tech-forward leather-upholstered cab with room for seven. But it still hasn’t lost its ruggedness. Under the hood, a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 turns out 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, backed by an eight-speed automatic and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. This Disco also gets an available air suspension, plus an automatically locking rear differential and Land Rover’s All Terrain Progress control system—both part of the $1,275 Capability Plus package.
The redesigned 2019 Mercedes-Benz G 550 is another off-road legend in our midst. Our metallic olive green G-Wagen is bigger and far more luxurious than its previous iteration, but it doesn’t appear to have lost the sparkle that made the original so beloved. Its old-school ladder frame, live rear axle, and three independently locking differentials team with an independent front axle, an electronically dampened suspension system, and a modern 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 producing 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The V-8 runs through a nine-speed automatic and Mercedes’ full-time four-wheel-drive system, which operates with a permanent 40/60 front/rear torque split that switches to a 50/50 split once low range is selected and the center differential is locked.
In 2016 we compared the Toyota Land Cruiser to the previous generations of the Wrangler and G-Class as part of our “Apocalypse Soon” comparison test. The Toyota won that comparison, and we extended an invite to defend its crown. No Land Cruisers were available, so we got the next best thing: the mechanically identical 2018 Lexus LX 570. The Lexus takes all we loved about the Toyota, including its crawl-control and turn-assist features, and adds a fancy height-adjustable hydraulic suspension system to ensure a smooth ride both on- and off-road. Our LX 570 also deletes the rather useless third row as a new-for-2018 option, boosting usable cargo space. Power comes courtesy of a 5.7-liter V-8 with 383 hp and 403 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel-drive system.
With our quartet of off-roaders picked, I assembled a team of three other like-minded editors whose off-road experience ranged from “literally tackled the Rubicon Trail last weekend,” to “drove on a dirt road that one time.” In other words, a perfect representation of the audience that buys these super SUVs. Yet all were seeking respite from city living: MotorTrend en Español managing editor Miguel Cortina and associate online editors Collin Woodard and Stefan Ogbac. We loaded up with our camping and off-road kits and met up with our photo team in their 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro (see “Aging Lion,” page TK) on the outskirts of Los Angles to make our escape.
The Road
If there’s one constant about off-roading, it’s that no one can agree on what “real” off-roading is. For some it’s rock-crawling or dune-bashing. For others, it’s thick woods and deep mud. Fortunately, we had six hours to argue over walkie-talkies as we launched our way up Route 395 toward the trailhead.
Despite our differing opinions, we do all agree that on-road performance is an important part of the off-road formula because to get off-road, you gotta drive on-road first.
It’s fair to say that previous versions of both the Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class have been livable (at best) on pavement. The old Wrangler was loud and unrefined, while the previous G-Wagen, as rapper Quavo so eloquently put it in a Rolling Stone interview, was “wobbly as f—.” Thankfully both have been dragged into the 21st century.
“On the road, the G-Wagen does a sold impression of a car-based crossover,” Woodard said. With its trucklike live front axle tossed in the scrap heap and with fancy computer-controlled dampers, the G 550 experience mimics that of Mercedes’ other flagship, the S-Class. It’s quiet and hushed as it goes down the highway, its cabin featuring comfortable seats and nice-looking—if cumbersome—twin infotainment displays on the dash.
That serenity disappears once you open the taps on the G 550’s twin-turbo V-8. Few things are as satisfying as watching the scenery change from the street to sky as the Benz’s nine-speed fires off rapid downshifts and the V-8 lets out a guttural roar. Once cooking at speed, the G 550 handles a corner or two well, considering its size and weight, but it definitely prefers long sweepers to tight switchbacks—and it lets you know it.
The Wrangler Rubicon is impressive in its own way. Just opening the door sets the expectation that the new Wrangler is a league above the old. Gone are the shiny, rock-hard plastics, replaced with high-quality materials and a cabin you no longer needing excuses. No excuses are necessary for the way it drives, either. Its eTorque 2.0-liter turbo I-4 is down 14 hp from the standard V-6, but its extra 35 lb-ft of torque make the Wrangler feel spritely. Even better, its small electric motor helps provide light power assist when cruising, smooths power delivery, and improves fuel economy. “The eTorque mild-hybrid is worth the $1,000 extra,” Ogbac said. “It has lots of power and torque on tap, passing on the highway is easy, and the eight-speed automatic pairs well with quick, smooth shifts.”
While the Mercedes-Benz and Jeep have matured greatly, the Lexus LX 570 has aged a bit. Updated with a new nose and an eight-speed automatic in 2015, the LX still rides on essentially the same platform with basically the same engine from its 2007 debut.  It feels it. Despite making a healthy amount of horsepower, the LX’s big V from PerformanceJunk WP Feed 3 https://ift.tt/2KdI6GM via IFTTT
